Description

The City of Cambridge is set to begin work on the reconstruction of King Open School on Cambridge Street.

The school began moving all of the teachers’ materials and furniture to the swing space(s) on February 12, 2016, and community and after-school programs will continue in the building during the February recess from February 15 – 19, 2016.

On February 22, the contractor will begin delivering construction barriers and installing them around the site. At this time, the basketball courts and seating area, as well as the existing school parking lots, will be unavailable for use by the public. Nearby basketball courts include Sennott Park, Gold Star Mothers Park and Ahern Field. Please click here for a plan showing the fencing locations, site trailers, and gate access.

The last school function in the building will be a performance on Feb 25 and 26 in school auditorium.

On March 1, 2016, the last City function will occur in the building as 850 Cambridge Street will be used as a polling location for the Presidential Primary.

On March 2, 2016, the City’s Construction Manager (Rich – KBE King School Joint Venture) will have full control of the site.

The King Open and Cambridge Street Upper School plan to reopen in September 2019. The Valente Library plans to reopen in 2019 and Gold Star Pool in 2020.

On Thursday, March 31, 2016, the City of Cambridge will be hosting a public meeting at the Frisoli Youth Center from 6:30pm-8:00pm as part of the community process for the King Open/Cambridge Street Upper School & Community Complex. City staff and architects will be in attendance to lead the discussion with the Construction Management team to discuss project status and schedule.
