How do I get a copy of a birth certificate?

You can obtain a copy of your birth certificate from the City Clerk’s office in two ways:

  1. By mailing a request to the Clerk’s office or
  2. By physically entering the office.

A request by mail will be processed and sent out within 2-3 days of the day it is received at the Clerk’s Office. You must be sure of five things:

  1. Your check or money order should be made payable to: City of Cambridge.
  2. Enclose the payment along with your written request.
  3. State your full birth name and date of birth on the request.
  4. Send a self-addressed stamped envelope.
  5. Include a daytime phone number or e-mail address.

Is I.D. necessary?

Usually identification is not necessary; however, in certain circumstances it is required, for example, if your parents were not married at the time of your birth. The birth record is only available to the subject of the record and the parent(s) listed on the record. If you are ordering by mail you must provide a photocopy of a picture I.D.

Are birth certificates public records?

Unless your parents were not married at the time of your birth, birth certificates are available to any member of the public.

If you wish to order by telephone or internet, please contact the State Registry of Vital Records. Credit card payment is required.
