Black Swallow-wort is one of the most aggressive, invasive weeds, and it is spreading at Fresh Pond and throughout Cambridge. You can help limit its further spread by removing its jalapeno pepper - like seed pods before they release their wind-borne seeds. Join other volunteers and Cambridge Water Department staff as we learn more about black swallow-wort and start removing pods around the Reservation. Then take what you learn into your own neighborhood, along with supplies, such as buttons, fliers to hang on doorknobs and bags to use for the seeds.
During the summer, we’ll be tracking our progress block by block throughout Cambridge. The Cambridge Pod Patrol Initiative is a public education campaign sponsored by Fresh Pond Reservation Volunteer Stewards, the City of Cambridge, Grow Native Massachusetts, Friends of Fresh Pond Reservation and CentersAndSquares.com.
