Apply for a Jitney Permit

License Commission

Jitney Permits are issued by the Cambridge License Commission pursuant to and in accordance with Massachusetts General Law c. 159A, § 1, Cambridge Municipal Code c. 5.20.360, and the Special Acts of 1930, c. 122.  It takes approximately four to six weeks for an application to be processed and a license to be issued, if approved.

How to Start

Step 1:

Submit the Jitney License Application along with a waiver to run a Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check for the owner, manager and any driver.  There is a $10.00 fee for each CORI submitted.

If the applicant is a corporation, a copy of the Articles of Organization and/or a copy of the Business Certificate or DBA (obtainable through the Clerk's office) must be included in the submission.

Step 2:

If the applicant has an office or a garage in Cambridge, the applicant must present site and floor plans to the Inspectional Services Department for approval from a building inspector.

Step 3:

Prior to a License Commission hearing, the License Commission obtains comments on the proposed Jitney route  from the Traffic, Parking, and Transportation (TPT) Department. In addition, if a Jitney application includes a request for a stop on a public street, the applicant will need a  Permit for the stop from TPT.  Please complete the TPT Jitney Review  Procedure form and provide all information under the Jitney category attached to the form to TPT.

Step 4:

The applicant must submit all forms and the signed plans to the License Commission, and pay a $175 hearing and advertising fee. The License Commission will schedule the next available hearing and notify the applicant of the date. If approved by the License Commission, the Jitney Permit Application will be forwarded to the City Manager to be placed on the City Council's meeting agenda. The City Council gives final approval for the Jitney permit.

Step 5:

If approved by the City Council, the License Commission will issue the license.
