Learn English

Do you want to learn to read, write, and speak English better? The Cambridge Community Learning Center (CLC) offers English classes for Cambridge residents through its English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) Program. Students from over 65 countries take English classes at the CLC. You must live in Cambridge to take English classes at the CLC.

The program offers:

  • 6 levels of English classes, including basic literacy
  • Morning and evening classes
  • 10-month minimum study
  • Access to citizenship classes, conversation classes, and more. 

Class Schedule

Choose to take morning or evening classes. 

  • Morning Schedule:  9 a.m. - 12 p.m., 2-3 days a week
  • Evening Schedule: 6:15 - 9:15 p.m., 2 days a week. 

Locations

Classes are offered in the Community Learning Center's two locations:

  • Central Square (5 Western Ave.)
  • North Cambridge: (286 Rindge Ave.)

Information Sessions and Placement Test

Learn about our English classes and take a placement test to see what level class is best for you! Sign up for an information session:

  • Thursday, May 30, 2024, 6 - 8:30 p.m., Central Square - Register
  • Friday, June 7, 2024, 9:30 a.m. - 12 p.m., Central Square - Register
  • Tuesday, June 18, 2024, 6 - 8:30 p.m., Central Square - Register

You must live in Cambridge to take English classes at the CLC. When you come to an information session, please bring one of these: a piece of mail, lease, driver's license, or something that has your address on it. If you stay in a homeless shelter in Cambridge, you can bring a letter from the program.

Special English Classes

English Class for CPS Parents or Caregivers

This class is for parents with young children who are Beginner-level English speakers and have children enrolled in Cambridge Public Schools.

Location: Cambridge Community Learning Center (5 Western Ave.) in Central Square

Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 - 11:30 a.m.

English Class for Parents with Young Children

This class is for parents with young children who are High-Beginner to Low-Intermediate level English speakers.

Location: Peabody School (70 Rindge Ave.) in North Cambridge

Schedule: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m.

English Class for Seniors

This class for for Cambridge adults age 60 and older who are beginner-level English speakers.

Location: Cambridge Senior Center (806 Massachusetts Ave.) in Central Square

Schedule: Wednesdays from 9:30 - 11:45 a.m.
