New Bike Parking Requirements

In June, the City Council adopted an updated set of zoning regulations for bicycle parking in new development. These regulations were developed by CDD working with the Traffic, Parking and Transportation Department, the Parking and Transportation Demand Management officer, the Cambridge Bicycle Committee, and the Planning Board, with support from other local organizations that promote bicycling in the community.

Bicycling has grown dramatically across the city, and space to park bicycles is in increasingly high demand. The new zoning requires that projects provide enough bike parking to meet the growing demand and ensures that the design of new bike parking meets the City’s standards for usability. The revised requirements are found in Section 6.100 of the Cambridge Zoning Ordinance.

This is the first major update to bicycle parking requirements since they were first established in 1981.
