Seniors from the Leonard J. Russell Apartments in North Cambridge recently participated in an 8-week training with Senior Citizen Outreach Officer Dan Burroso.
The course included a tour of the Robert W. Healy Public Safety Facility as well as presentations on forensics, narcotics, traffic, domestic violence, and elder abuse prevention.
Seniors were also able to practice their marksmanship on a firearms training simulator and learn about the tools and tactics used by the Cambridge Police Special Response Team.
“This is a valuable program,” said Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert C. Haas. “Our officers enjoy interacting with the seniors in the community and helping to provide them with insight into how police perform their duties.”
Ten Cambridge senior citizens successfully completed the program, which is made available at different senior housing throughout the city. The next academy will be held at the Putnam Square Apartments in the spring.
