Police Units

Below is a list of the various units within the Cambridge Police Department that are overseen by the Operations Division, Support Services Division, and the Office of the Commissioner. Click on the specific unit for more information about the unit, its personnel, and its contact information.

Academy/Training Unit

The Cambridge Police Academy/Training Unit is responsible for coordinating and directing the Police Department's training efforts.

Auxiliary Police

The Cambridge Police Auxiliary consists of more than 20 volunteers who assist the Cambridge Police Department with City events.

Court Prosecutor's Office

The Court Prosecutor's Office is tasked with reviewing incoming arrest and criminal complaints as well as various other activities association with the court process.

Crime Analysis Unit

The Crime Analysis Unit carefully reviews all information received by the police department, looking for crime phenomena and trends.

Crime Scene Services Unit

The Crime Scene Services Unit is the "CSI" Unit of the department, assisting detectives in processing major crime scenes and evidence collected by officers and detectives.

Criminal Investigations Unit

The Criminal Investigations Unit is responsible for reviewing reports and making a determination as to the solvability of a crime.

Crisis Negotiations Unit

The Crisis Negotiations Unit consists of specially trained officers who are prepared to deal with people who have taken someone hostage or have barricaded themselves within a building or similar setting.

Detail Office

The Detail/Off-Duty Employment Office is responsible for assigning off-duty officers to construction sites throughout the City to ensure motor vehicle and pedestrian safety.

Domestic Violence Unit

The Domestic Violence Unit investigates domestic related assaults and abuse incidents.

Family and Social Justice Section

The newly structured Family and Social Justice Section brings together certain operational units to provide specific services to members of the community who would be better served through a “social justice approach” than what could be afforded to them through conventional criminal justice approaches.

Public Safety Information Technology

The Public Safety Information Technology Unit is responsible for maintaining the police, fire and emergency communication department’s computer systems, infrastructure, and radio system.

The Office of Procedural Justice will give the community the ability to see how the Department and its officers are interacting with the public.

Operations Division

Operations personnel respond to calls for service of an emergency and non-emergency nature as well as perform proactive assignments adressing quality of life issues.

Patrol Sections personnel (Patrol Officers) respond to calls for service of an emergency and non-emergency nature as well as performing proactive assignments addressing quality of life issues.

Planning, Budget & Personnel

The Office of Planning, Budget & Personnel Department ensures that the department has a competent and diverse workforce that can work well to meet the City's goals as well as manage the department's budget.

Professional Standards

The Professional Standards Unit ensures the public’s trust and maintain the department’s integrity.

Property & Evidence Unit

The Property Office is responsible for securing all properties that come into the control of the Cambridge Police Department.

Public Information Office

The Public Information Office is the central location for all press contacts and media requests, as well as an important point of contact for members of the community seeking information from the police.

Records Unit

The Cambridge Police Department's Records Unit is a controlled public service area which stores all police records and reports.

Sexual Assault Unit

The Sexual Assault Unit investigates sexual crimes such as rape, indecent assault, indecent exposure, and peeping & spying.

Special Investigations Unit

The Special Investigations Unit investigates illegal drug activity and vice crimes such as prostitution and gambling.

Support Services Division

The Support Services Division oversees the Criminal Investigations and Administrative Services sections of the department.

Tactical Operations

The Cambridge Police Tactical Operations include the Explosive Ordinance Unit, Special Response Team (SRT), and the Tactical Patrol Force (TPF).

Traffic Enforcement Unit

The goal of the Traffic Unit is to serve the community by enforcing the motor vehicle traffic laws of the Commonwealth as well as reducing the number and severity of accidents in the City.
