Cambridge Police to Participate in “Global Police Tweet-A-Thon”

The Cambridge Police Department will join law enforcement agencies from around the world to take part in a “Global Police Tweet-A-Thon” today, March 22.

The goal of this tweet-a-thon is to bring attention to the use of social media by law enforcement agencies.  All participating agencies will use the hashtag #poltwt to create awareness about police work and promote the use of social media in policing.  Find a map showing all participating agencies here.

“We believe strongly in the ability of social media to communicate with the public in a timely manner,” said Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert C. Haas.  “Tweeting information helps to inform our residents and followers about what is happening in Cambridge, and we are proud to take part in this tweet-a-thon to highlight the value that social media provides not only to the public, but to law enforcement as well.”

Cambridge Police have been participating in social media for over two years.  Recently, Cambridge Police became only the second department in the nation to share automated, real-time crime tweets with their followers.  This innovative use of social media has been a great success, helping @CambridgePolice reach over 5,000 followers on Twitter.
