Roxbury Man Arrested with Illegal Firearm after Traffic Stop in Cambridge

At approximately 2:15 a.m. on Sunday, June 9^th, Cambridge Police noticed a car double parked in the traffic lane on Massachusetts Avenue in Central Square and playing extremely loud music.

Approaching the vehicle to investigate, the officer spoke with the male operator who was found behind the wheel with a plastic cup full of liquid between his legs and emitting a strong odor of alcohol.  The man stated, “I was having a Hennessy after the clubs let out,” before police asked for his license and registration.

While attempting to share his identification with the officer, the man dropped his ID and other pieces of paper on the street and floor of the vehicle.

Additional Cambridge Police Officers arrived and assisted in administering field sobriety tests to the man while one of the officers returned to the vehicle to collect the papers the man dropped.

Upon gathering the papers dropped inside the vehicle, the officer noticed the handle of a firearm under the driver’s seat.  Upon securing the firearm, officers determined it to be a fully loaded 9mm handgun that had the serial number defaced and for which the man could not produce a license to carry.

As a result of the discovery of the firearm, and his performance on the field sobriety tests, Freddie Diaz, 37, of 41 Ruggles Street in Roxbury, MA was placed under arrest for OUI-Liquor, Carry Loaded Firearm without License, Drink Alcohol from Open Container, Receive Firearm with Defaced Number, Reckless Operation of a Motor Vehicle, and Improper Operation of a Motor Vehicle.

The details contained above are allegations.  The suspect is presumed to be innocent unless and until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
