The MBTA plans to close parts of the Red Line in Cambridge in February in order to make track improvements, inspect tunnels, and make other upgrades. Free shuttles will replace regular train service on parts of the Red Line from Monday, February 5 to Wednesday, February 14; and from Saturday, February 24 to Sunday, February 25.
From Monday, February 5 to Wednesday February 14, free and accessible shuttle buses will replace Red Line trains:
From start of service until 8:45 p.m. between Alewife and Harvard.
From 8:45 p.m. until end of service between Alewife and Park Street.
Shuttles will stop at all Red Line stations affected by the closures. Normal Red Line operation is expected to resume on February 15.
Shuttle buses will also replace train service between Harvard Square and Broadway from Saturday, February 24 – Sunday, February 25, 2024. Normal Red Line operation is expected to resume February 26. Shuttle buses will stop at all Red Line T stations affected by the closures.
Shuttle buses meet minimum ADA requirements. Transit Ambassadors and other MBTA personnel will be available to assist riders throughout the Red Line. Riders can ask MBTA shuttle and station staff or use a station call box for assistance related to accessibility.
People traveling can use the MBTA Trip Planner app to evaluate different travels times. The app will include up-to-date information about shuttles, MBTA buses, and commuter rail schedules. During shutdowns, the Commuter Rail will be fare-free between Porter Square and North Station.
All commuters should plan for longer-than-usual travel times, whether they are driving, taking shuttles, or riding the bus. Red Line closures will likely result in increased road traffic citywide and reduced street parking in some areas along the shuttle bus route. We encourage community members - when possible - to minimize driving by taking MBTA shuttles, buses, or explore alternate modes of transportation.
On parts of the Red Line where service continues to operate, riders should also expect longer-than-usual times between subway trains. All Red Line passengers should plan for extra travel time.
