Snow Removal Resources for Seniors and People with Disabilities

During the winter, property owners are required to shovel the sidewalks that abut their property down to the bare pavement. The path shoveled must be at least 3 feet wide (wide enough for someone using a wheelchair, walker, or stroller).

The Cambridge Council on Aging offers resources to Cambridge seniors (adults over the age of 60) and people with disabilities who need assistance shoveling.

Snow Exemption Program

Cambridge homeowners who are elderly or have a disability may qualify for the Snow Exemption Program if they meet income eligibility guidelines. City staff shovel the sidewalks of eligible homeowners after clearing public roadways, schools, and public building properties. City staff are not responsible for shoveling homeowners’ personal property, including walkways, entryways and front or back steps.

To learn if you are eligible, call the Council on Aging at 617-349-6220. If you do not qualify for the Snow Exemption Program, Council on Aging staff can provide you with a list of professional snow removal companies. Homeowners should contact these companies as soon as possible if they are interested in snow removal services.

Student Shoveler Program

The Council on Aging and the Office of Workforce Development compile a list of Cambridge high school students who are available to shovel snow for seniors and people with disabilities. Many of these students have participated in the Mayor’s Summer Youth Employment Program. Cambridge teens who would like to be part of the Student Shoveler Program can apply through this form.

If you are age 60 and older and interested in connecting with a student shoveler:

  • Contact the Council on Aging at 617-349-6220 for a list of local shovelers.
  • Homeowners are responsible for contacting students directly once the Council on Aging provides the list. We recommend that homeowners reach out to students prior to snowfall to discuss shoveler availability, payment, and other expectations.
  • The pay is negotiated between the homeowner and the student, and the homeowner will pay the student directly. On average, pay for shoveling ranges from $25 - $40 per job, depending on the amount of snow and size of the area being shoveled.
