Hot weather and extreme heat can cause serious illness and can even be life-threatening. Heat-related illnesses, like heat stroke and dehydration, can occur. During heat waves, Cambridge Police Officers will distribute cold bottles of water to residents in need while they are out on patrol.

Through the Hampshire Street Safety Improvement Project, the City will add separated bike lanes to Hampshire Street between Inman Square and Broadway, creating a more comfortable biking connection between Inman Square and the Port/Kendall Square. During the 11th Participatory Budgeting cycle, Cambridge residents voted to fund Welcome Baby Boxes for new parents. This initiative, offered by the Center for Families, provides Baby Boxes to eligible Cambridge parents who have a child under one year old. Since outreach began in the Fall of 2025, more than 60 Cambridge households have signed up to receive a Baby Box.

This summer, Cambridge--like so many other communities across the nation -- will need to manage and prepare for hot weather and extreme heat as well as continuing to manage COVID-19.
