Start the year off right by getting to know Cambridge birds! All ages are welcome to join us as we observe birds at Fresh Pond, which provides habitat for many different species at all times of the year. This event will focus on birds that can be found in the winter in Cambridge, including several species of ducks, sparrows and more. We may also see some of our year-round resident birds, and we will discuss general birdwatching tips and learn more about the birds we share our outdoor spaces with. A limited supply of binoculars will be available. Please dress accordingly as we will be outside for the entire walk. Registration is required for this event. Join us for a walk at Fresh Pond as we explore the wonderful world of bugs! We will learn about some common local insects, arachnids, and other invertebrates, and get to know some plants that host lots of bug species. This program is open to all ages, from adults to children and their caregivers. Registration is required. Calling all bakers for a pie potluck! Make a pie and come bring it to share with others. Share recipes and samples of everyone's favorite fall snack. Various baking and pie cookbooks are available for pickup at the Branch.

Join us for a weaving workshop with Katherine Santos, a member of the Choctaw-Apache Tribe and Librarian for American Indigenous Studies at Harvard’s Fine Arts Library. We will explore how weaving and storytelling intersect for many Indigenous nations in the United States and learn the history behind weaving materials used on this land for millennia. With Santos’s guidance, participants will practice foundational weaving techniques in community with one another. All materials will be provided. Recommended for youth ages 8 and up. This program can accommodate 40 weavers. Tickets are available on a first come, first served basis on the day of the program. The entire party must be present to receive a ticket. Join the Cambridge Public Library in welcoming Philip Taubman, former Washington Bureau Chief of The New York Times and Pulitzer Prize-winning author William Taubman for a discussion of their latest book, McNamara at War, a captivating and authoritative psychological portrait of Robert S. McNamara. Informed by newly discovered diaries, letters, and interviews with those closest to him, the authors uncover an emotionally tortured man—a man who mastered everything in life, until the Vietnam War mastered him. The discussion will be moderated by Fredrik Logevall, the Laurence D. Belfer Professor of International Affairs at Harvard Kennedy School and the author of JFK: Coming of Age in the American Century.

Bring the extra garden seeds you don't think you will plant this year! See what your neighbors have before you purchase more! We will have envelopes and pens to help keep them straight. If you don't have seeds, come anyway, as we will have extras. This event is co-hosted by Cambridge City Growers, a group of volunteers across Cambridge working to start up gardens in neighborhoods to increase access to healthy, organic, and locally grown food.
