In this 90-minute workshop, you’ll learn the basics of sewing machine operation and safety. This session will cover machine setup, basic functions, threading the machine, reloading the bobbin, sewing straight stitches, and recognizing when stitch tension has gone awry. We’ll also cover some safety best practices when operating a sewing machine. As we learn together, we’ll work on a simple sewing project—a drawstring bag—which most students will be able to complete by the end of the class. You must complete Hive Safety Training before registering for this workshop.

At the start of this class, participants will complete Hive Safety Training.

Join in to reflect on and identify goals for the new year as we create visual representations of those goals with collage! Crafting materials such as paper, magazines, scissors, and glue sticks are provided. No registration needed, no cost. Repairing Garment Closures will focus on reattaching and adding simple closures like buttons, snaps, and hooks & eyes to clothing. Using just a needle and thread, participants will learn how to replace different types of buttons, including shirt and coat buttons, or add invisible snaps to help their garments lie on the body better. Please note that this workshop will not cover zipper repairs. Suitable for beginners with little or no sewing experience.

Want to learn how to create custom clothing and other fiber projects with embroidered text? In this workshop, you’ll use a digital embroidery machine to stitch personalized designs and take home a unique piece. This class is for those with prior sewing machine experience. If you're new to sewing, we recommend taking our Sewing 101 workshop first as we will not spend time reviewing the basic mechanics of sewing. Registration is prioritized for patrons who will directly benefit from interpretation in American Sign Language. Please email thehive@cambridgema.gov to register. You must complete Hive Safety Training before registering for this workshop. Please arrive on time. If you are more than 10 minutes late, you will not be able to join the class.
