Cambridge Main Library Achieves Record One Million Checkouts in a Single Year

6/29/2011

For the first time in history, Cambridge Main Library has checked out more than 1,000,000 items in a single year. This represents a 115% increase over the last full year of Main Library service.  Such astonishing numbers demonstrate the community’s enthusiasm for its new Main Library and affirms our city’s recent designation as America’s “most well-read city.

“The success of the new Main Library reflects the city’s visionary leadership in its design and vision, the professionalism and hard work of the library staff who keep smiling as the numbers (and the workload) rise, as does the community’s passion for learning of all kinds,” said City Manager Robert W. Healy. “It is wonderful to see our hardworking library staff have a facility that equals their excellence.”

Nearly 2,000 people of all ages and backgrounds enter the doors of the Main Library daily.  They study, read newspapers and magazines, use computers, attend classes, participate in book discussions or English conversation groups, listen to stories or sing songs.  They take books home.  Sometimes they just come to have lunch on the patio.

“In the early stages of the library building project, the community said it wanted the Main Library to be the ‘civic heart of the community’, noted Library Director Susan Flannery.  “Unquestionably, the community got what it desired.”

Deputy City Manager Richard C. Rossi congratulated the library staff on their new milestone, adding that “A great staff and our special new Main Library are a combination for success.”
