Playback in the Port theater workshop

Playback in the Port

Will Chalmus will lead eight free playback theatre workshops in Cambridge's Port neighborhood, beginning with one at the YWCA in Central Square, 7 Temple St., from 2:30 to 5:30 p.m. Saturday, May 19. The program is funded in part by Cambridge Arts as part of our FLOW program.

Playback Theatre is a form of improvisational theater in which audience members share and listen to each other's stories and emotions, and then a team of actors "play back" those stories with words, gesture and music--all with the intention of honoring the personal narratives of the community.  It is as if one becomes witness to a show about themselves while also having the chance to see what life is like inside someone else's shoes. Playback Theatre was created by Jonathan Fox and Jo Salas in the late '70s as a means of combining play, personal narratives, theater, community, and restorative practices.

Chalmus is a graduate and educator for the Centre for Playback Theatre and other institutions of higher education. He has received the Cambridge Arts' Port Flow Grant and will lead eight workshops this year, all free to the public. The workshops are designed to develop the personal skills and the understanding that is essential to practicing Playback Theatre techniques, as well as to unveil how these skills may be applicable to everyday life. The workshops will be held on the third Saturday of every month.
