Opening Celebration for Common Exchange

3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Saturday, May 13, 2017

Location:
1500 Massachusetts Ave, Cambridge, MA 02138

Cambridge Arts invites you to attend the Opening Celebration for Common Exchange, a free public art and performance series pondering the meaning of Cambridge’s historic Common, from 3 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 13, in the park.

3 p.m. Lee Walton and Jon Rubin present a pair of fife and drum musicians playing protest songs—launching a 30-day performance.

4 p.m. In Andy Graydon’s performance, a choir will materialize from the edges of the park and come together in harmony at the center.

5 p.m. Join an eyes-closed tour of the park led by Carmen Papalia to get a new perspective on the accessibility of our shared civic spaces (pictured above).

In addition, the Opening Celebration will launch a summer-long exhibit of public art at the Common. Cambridge artist Kelly Sherman is hanging banners around the park that will be printed with residents’ personal recollections of memorable moments they have spent there. To prompt thoughts on how traditional public monuments function, Paul Ramirez Jonas will present a boulder with a cork message board embedded in its side. The bolder will be placed in the park for visitors to post their own public messages to the community. Julianne Swartz offers a sound piece that is triggered by visitors sitting on a marked bench and holding hands.
