The Cambridge Police Department is proud to participate in the Blue Envelope Program. Blue Envelope is a communications tool that is specifically designed to help make traffic stops and other law enforcement interactions safer and less stressful for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and other communication challenges. This program emerged from a partnership between the Massachusetts Chiefs of Police Association, the Massachusetts State Police, Advocates for Autism of Massachusetts, and The Arc of Massachusetts, alongside input from individuals with autism and their families.
How Blue Envelope Works:
- Participants are issued a recognizable blue envelope that can be used to store a driver's license, vehicle registration, and other important documents that a police officer might request.
- The envelope is recognizable to police officers, providing a visual clue that the individual they are interacting with is living with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or another communication challenge.
- Having the necessary documents readily available and giving those involved a better understanding of the situation can help to reduce stress and improve the quality of the interaction.
How Can I Participate in the Blue Envelope Program:
- Cambridge Police began participating in the Blue Envelope Program in 2026. Envelopes are available at the Front Desk of the Robert W. Healy Public Safety Facility located at 125 Sixth Street or the Central Square Reporting Station. Envelopes can also be requested through the Family & Social Justice Section.
- Massachusetts State Police was among the first agencies to implement the Blue Envelope Program. Blue Envelopes are available at State Police Barracks across the Commonwealth, or can be requested online here: Click Here to Request a Blue Envelope
