The Lusitania Woodland Habitat Restoration Project is a volunteer effort led by the Friends of Fresh Pond with the support of the Cambridge Water Department. The restoration project aims to improve the health of the Lusitania Woodland by removing invasive weeds and diseased trees in a 4 acre section of the Reservation. Native trees, shrubs, and wildflowers are planted in the cleared areas to promote healthy growth. Many of the plants used have been started from seeds, rooted from cuttings, or produced by dividing mature plants in order to keep costs down.

The goals of the Lusitania Woodland Habitat Restoration project are as follows:

  1. Remove invasive species and restore the Lusitania Woodland ecosystems,
  2. Demonstrate that volunteers on a limited budget can restore a degraded woodland to a healthy condition.
