What is PARK(ing) Day? What is allowed? Who can participate? What should I transform my parking spot into?

Come learn about PARK(ing) Day 2016 in Cambridge and grab an application form. Applications open on March 16th and are due by May 1.

We have limited spots this year, so please think creatively about what you will do.  Spaces are filled based on creativity of space, message, and timeliness. PARK(ing) Day is meant to create mini-parks in parking spots.  We do not encourage simply placing a table with outreach materials in your spot.

The Cambridge Community Development Department (CDD) seeks creative folks to participate in the official City of Cambridge PARK(ing) Day celebration, an international event in which metered parking spaces are transformed into engaging “parks” for one day of the year.  Previous spots have been: Shakespeare in the park, lemonade stands, book swaps, hula hoop lessons, CPR lessons, bocce ball, dog parks, pilates classes, mini-golf, spas, and much more.

East Cambridge Dog Owners Group

PARK(ing) Day is an annual open-source global event where residents, artists and activists collaborate to temporarily transform metered parking spaces into “PARK(ing)” spaces: temporary public places. The project began in 2005 when Rebar, a San Francisco art and design studio, converted a single metered parking space into a temporary public park in downtown San Francisco. PARK(ing) Day has since evolved into a global movement.

The mission of PARK(ing) Day is to call attention to the need for more urban open space, to generate critical debate around how public space is created and allocated, and to improve the quality of urban human habitat … at least until the meter runs out!

APPLICATION DUE DATE: May 1, 2016
