Lafayette Square

New pedestrian plaza at Lafayette Square after construction

The roads through Lafayette Square (the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Main Street) were realigned and a pedestrian plaza created as part of a larger reconstruction of Massachusetts Avenue from Central Square to Memorial Drive. Construction begin in 2006 and ended in 2009. Surface reconstruction included a new roadway, sidewalk, lighting, street trees and street furniture and features to enhance safety for pedestrians and cyclists.  The new plaza includes trees, landscaped areas, seating in the form of seat walls, benches and tables with chairs, art, pedestrian lighting, and space for community events.
