Clarendon Avenue Playground prior to improvements

The Clarendon Avenue Playground underwent targeted repair work and equipment upgrades to improve play conditions for and the safety of its users.

This work followed the City's ongoing commitment to the goals of the Healthy Parks and Playgrounds Initiative, which guides all improvements to the City's playgrounds, parks, and open spaces. The goals of the Healthy Parks and Playgrounds Initiative are to provide a diverse range of play opportunities throughout the city that are fun, physically challenging, creatively stimulating and socially engaging, and that serve children and adults of all different age groups, ability levels, and interests.

 


April 2021

The slide replacement and related rubber surfacing repair is now complete.

January 2021

Construction at the Clarendon Avenue Playground is now complete and the park has re-opened for use.

The park features an improved entry plaza and seating area. The improved park also includes a greater variety of play opportunities with the addition of swings, a water table to accompany the relocated sand play area, and the loose play materials to encourage creative play. Other features include the addition of new site furniture, a new rubberized surface and shade structure, and additional site plantings.

July 2020

Following the City’s Temporary Emergency Construction Moratorium Order related to COVID-19 and subsequent amendments, construction activity at the Clarendon Avenue Playground has now resumed. The project is now expected to be completed in Fall 2020.

January 2020

Due to delays in shipping of playground equipment, the playground is now expected to be completed by July 2020.

October 2019

The Clarendon Avenue Playground has been under construction since August 2019 for repair work and equipment upgrades. Upcoming project updates:

  • the contractor will focus on underground utilities through November 2019
  • additional play equipment will arrive in early December 2019
  • most demolition work is complete, with the exception of one section of the playground that is being used as a staging area

The playground is expected to remain closed until June 2020. Construction work hours will be Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.

“No Parking” signs will be posted at least 24 hours in advance of the work. Please refrain from parking in work zones during posted work hours.

August 2019

The City will begin construction on the Clarendon Avenue Park Renovation.

We anticipate the playground will be closed until June 2020 (subject to change). During construction, general work hours will be Monday-Friday, 7am-4pm.

March 2019

The Community Development Department will share the improvements plan with the North Cambridge Stabilization Committee on:

February 2019

The Community Development Department will host an open house session to share improvements plan for playground on:

  • Tuesday, March 5th – 3-6pm – Trolley Square Apartments, 8 Cameron Ave, Cambridge, MA 02140

The Clarendon Avenue Playground will undergo targeted repairs and equipment upgrades to improve play conditions for and the safety of its users. The scope of work includes:

  • visual and functional improvements to the playground's Mass Ave façade
  • rubber resurfacing of the play space in the center of the playground
  • additional play equipment in the play space at the far end of the playground
  • additional shade trees and natural elements
  • loose and fixed furniture
