New library at night

Hello Everyone,

There is a lot to reflect on that has recently happened related to racial justice and L.G.B.T.Q.I.A. rights.

We at the Cambridge Public Library continue to strive to level the playing field in the work we do to support literacy and learning, freedom and opportunity. We stand with our patrons and community members in combating structural racism and support L.G.B.T.Q.I.A. rights.

In celebration of the 50th anniversary of PRIDE, on Saturday, June 20 at 11:00 am, children and their grown-ups are invited to a special Virtual Story Time with Drag Kings, Queens, and Friends, which includes songs and stories about what makes each of us fabulous! Registration is required.

Other Library Programs & Resources

It is one of the most special times of the year at the Cambridge Public Library- Summer Reading!

Summer Reading will run from June 22 to August 28, 2020.

For the first time, we are inviting youth and adult readers to participate in the same program. Registered participants can collect badges for any activities they choose. Try to collect as many badges as you can throughout the summer. Anyone who obtains at least half the available badges completes their summer reading challenge. Cambridge residents who complete the challenge are eligible for a Porter Square Books e-gift card, while supplies last.

Individuals, families and groups are invited to register starting Monday, June 22. To register or to learn more, please go to our website:  http://cambridgepubliclibrary.org/.

This year, the Library will host all its summer reading events virtually. Programs and performances for children and families will be offered almost every day, as well as special summer reading events just for adults.  You can register for these kids’ events happening next week: Rosalita’s Puppets, a Concert with Alastair Moock, Acrobatics by Li Liu or Nappy's Puppets!

I would like to say thank you to all of our wonderful Summer Reading sponsors including the Cambridge Public Library Foundation, Friends of the Cambridge Public Library, East Cambridge Savings Bank, the Massachusetts Library System, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

Join us for Portraiture in Photography with documentary photographer and filmmaker Leonie Marinovich on June 17, from 6-8 p.m. This virtual program will focus on the nature of portraits, and then participants will do some practical work to improve their own photos. Registration is required.

Our Sunday Morning Yoga class with Rachael Junard continues through June. Please join us for the next community class on June 21, from 10 a.m.-11 a.m. Registration is required.

And finally, in celebration of Caribbean Heritage month, our booklist this week celebrates Caribbean-American voices!

Sincerely,

Maria McCauley, Director of Libraries
