CAMBRIDGE, MA, June 12, 2019 – – The Cambridge Public Library (CPL) will launch readers into “A Universe of Stories” for its annual Summer Reading program in honor of NASA’s 50th anniversary of Apollo 11’s historic moon landing.

Summer Reading challenges children to set their own reading goals and to read toward them over the course of the summer. Children who reach their goal will receive a certificate from their CPL Children’s Librarian. Summer Reading activities for various ages will take place at all CPL locations. Parents and children can pick up a full list of Summer Reading activities at any branch of the CPL.

“Summers are always exciting at the CPL because of our Summer Reading program,” said Dr. Maria McCauley, Director of Libraries for the City of Cambridge. “This program enables our youngest patrons to develop positive attitudes towards books and reading, and this year’s theme dovetails nicely with the work that the CPL is doing around STEAM.”

The Summer Reading kickoff event will be a Prismatic Laser Space Show, with dazzling laser animations synchronized to riveting music! This event will take place in the Lecture Hall of the Main Library on Wednesday, June 26, beginning at 6:30 p.m..

"We always want children to find the joy in reading and learning for pleasure, and the summer reading program helps make that happen." said Julie Roach, Manager of Youth Services. “We hope everyone joins us this summer!”

Summer Reading is sponsored by the Friends of the Cambridge Public Library, East Cambridge Savings Bank, the Boston Bruins, and the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners. To find out more about the Cambridge Public Library’s Summer Reading program, call the CPL Children’s Room at 617-349-4038.

For the first time, the CPL will also be offering a Summer Reading Program for adults this year. More information about this exciting program will be released soon!
