New library at night

The Cambridge Public Library will reopen the Main Library for Library Express services, including limited browsing, on Wednesday, June 2, 2021. During this next phase of our reopening, you may visit the Main Library to check out holds, browse for additional items, and get help from staff.

Library Express hours at the Main Library (449 Broadway) will be:

  • Tuesday, Wednesday: 12 p.m. to 7 p.m.
  • Thursday, Friday, Saturday: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

No appointments are required. We have modified our initial plan for Library Express following the City’s and Commonwealth’s decision to lift COVID-19 restrictions effective May 29.

In-library services will initially be very limited. You will be able to browse the ground and first floor collections and curated selections from closed floors and zones. Other floors will remain closed, and public computers and spaces to sit, work and study will not be available. We encourage you to keep your visits brief during this phase of reopening.

We plan to restore additional services at the Main Library—including public computing, limited seating, and browsing in additional areas, including the Children’s Room—starting in the second half of June. We also plan for branch libraries to transition from contactless pickup to Library Express in late June or early July.

Through June 15, you must wear a mask inside the library if you are over age 5, regardless of vaccination status. We encourage your children ages 2-5 to wear masks as well. If you are unable to wear a mask for a medical reason, please contact Library Administration at 617-349-4032 to discuss accommodations.

Contactless pickup at the Main Library will end on Saturday, May 29 to allow us to prepare for the resumption of in-library services. If you prefer contactless service, you may contact us at 617-349-4040 or library@cambridgema.gov to ask that your holds be sent to a branch location offering contactless pickup.

Please note the Main Library will be closed on June 1 to prepare the building for reopening.

We look forward to welcoming you back into the Main Library!
