Katie Kitamura

Katie Kitamura, the award-winning author of Intimacies, will speak at an in-person program at the Cambridge Public Library in celebration of Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Kitamura will be in conversation with Meghan O’Rourke, the author of The Invisible Kingdom: Reimagining Chronic Illness. The event, which was originally scheduled to take place on May 12, will take place at the Main Library on June 2, from 6-7:30 p.m. The program is sponsored by the Cambridge Public Library Foundation. 

Intimacies is a story about an unnamed woman working as an interpreter in the International Court of Justice at the Hague. She confronts power, love, and violence, both in her personal intimacies and in her work at the Court. She is soon pushed to the precipice, where betrayal and heartbreak threaten to overwhelm her, forcing her to choose what she wants from her life. 

Intimacies was listed as the one of The New York Times’ 10 Best Books of 2021, a Washington Post Notable Book of 2021, and one of Barack Obama’s Favorite Books of 2021. It was longlisted for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award and was a finalist for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize. A recipient of fellowships from the Lannan, Santa Maddalena, and Jan Michalski foundations, Kitamura has written for publications including The New York TimesThe Guardian, GrantaBOMBTriple Canopy, and Frieze. Kitamura’s work has been translated into 21 languages and is being adapted for film and television. She teaches in the creative writing program at New York University. 

Meghan O'Rourke is a writer, poet, and editor. She is the author of the New York Times bestseller The Invisible Kingdom: Reimagining Chronic Illness; the bestselling memoir The Long Goodbye; and the poetry collections Sun In Days, which was named a New York Times Best Poetry Book of the Year; Once; and Halflife, which was a finalist for the Patterson Poetry Prize and Britain’s Forward First Book Prize.
