48th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Annette Gordon-Reed, the award-winning author of many books including On Juneteenth, will be the keynote speaker at the 48th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day event on Thursday, January 19, from 6-7:30 p.m. at the Main Library, 449 Broadway. The event will also be livestreamed by 22 City View, the Cambridge municipal cable channel. The event is co-sponsored by the City of Cambridge, Cambridge Trust Charitable Foundation, and the Cambridge Public Library Foundation. Registration is required to participate.
Dr. Gordon-Reed has received many awards for her work, including the Pulitzer Prize in History in 2009 and the National Book Award in 2008, for The Hemingses of Monticello: An American Family. In addition to articles and reviews, her other works include Thomas Jefferson and Sally Hemings: An American Controversy, Vernon Can Read! A Memoir, a collaboration with Vernon Jordan, Race on Trial: Law and Justice in American History, a volume of essays that she edited, Andrew Johnson and, with Peter S. Onuf, “Most Blessed of the Patriarchs”: Thomas Jefferson and the Empire of the Imagination. Dr. Gordon-Reed is also the recipient of numerous fellowships including the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship in the humanities, and a MacArthur Fellowship.
Dr. Gordon-Reed’s lecture coincides with the introduction of a new Black Voices collection at the Central Square Branch Library. This collection will comprise popular and contemporary works by Black authors, creators, artists, actors and characters. Patron suggestions for additions to the collection are welcomed and encouraged through the Library’s Suggest A Purchase form.
In addition to the Black Voices collection, a new Black Voices Book Group has been created to highlight the collection. The book group will meet in March to discuss On Juneteenth. The exact date of the meeting will be announced at the beginning of February. Community members can checkout out a copy of the book at the Main Library or any branch location.
