Xochitl Gonzalez Carousel

Dear Patrons,

This Tuesday, October 17, the Library will welcome Xochitl Gonzalez, the New York Times bestselling author of Olga Dies Dreaming, for a reading and conversation with local poet and artist Jess Rizkallah, the author of the magic my body becomes. This event is co-sponsored by the Cambridge Public Library Foundation. Registration is required.

On Tuesday, we are also launching our five-part Navigating Solo: Planning Tools for Aging Well series facilitated by Ailene Gerhardt, in partnership with Cambridge Neighbors and sponsored by the Cambridge Public Library Foundation. Sessions will cover topics such as healthcare decision-making, enhancing your support system, and exploring housing. Registration is required for each session.

Wellness for Seniors: Zumba Gold (Virtual)

In this 90-minute workshop, you’ll learn the basics of sewing machine operation and safety. This session will cover machine setup, basic functions, threading the machine, reloading the bobbin, sewing straight stitches, and recognizing when stitch tension has gone awry. We’ll also cover some safety best practices when operating a sewing machine. As we learn together, we’ll work on a simple project—a drawstring bag—which most students will be able to complete by the end of the class. LEGO Time (Main)

It’s a weekly block party! Bring friends to design and build amazing LEGO structures. Let your imagination run wild! The Children's Room has plenty of LEGO pieces, so you don’t need to bring your own. Navigating Solo: Planning Tools for Aging Well (Main)

Please join us for a talk and Q&A session on this five-part Navigating Solo series facilitated by Ailene Gerhardt, an independent Board-Certified Patient Advocate and Certified Senior Advisor at Beacon Patient Solutions LLC, in partnership with Cambridge Neighbors and sponsored by the Cambridge Public Library Foundation. Sessions will take place on Tuesdays, October 17- November 14, 2023, 2-3:30 p.m. Each session will include a 60-minute talk and 30-minute Q&A period on the topics listed above. After each session, a follow-up resource sheet tailored to attendees’ questions will be shared with registrants via e-mail using a password-protected website, hosted by Beacon Patient Solutions LLC. PowerPoint slides will not be circulated to attendees, and sessions will not be recorded.

He has taught at five VA Boston Healthcare System locations and at senior centers. This event is held in person. CPL Nature Club: Morning Bird Watching Walk at Mount Auburn Cemetery (Collins)

Join us for a morning walk at the renowned bird watching spot in our own backyard, Mount Auburn Cemetery! We will help you identify birds, learn bird-watching tips and tricks, and familiarize yourself with autumn migratory birds as well as those that can be spotted year round. The walk will meet at the courtyard of the Collins Branch (64 Aberdeen Ave.) at 10:15 a.m. and head over to the cemetery together.

Learn how to use our Epilog Zing, an industry-standard laser cutting machine. Complete this workshop to earn a badge for the Zing laser cutter. With a badge, you can reserve the Epilog Zing to use on our equipment booking page at designated times. Note: The Epilog Zing laser cutter and Glowforge laser cutter require separate trainings. You must participate in the Glowforge workshop in order to operate our Glowforge Pro laser cutter. You must complete The Hive Safety Training before registering for this workshop. Get Creative! Series: Acrylic Painting Workshop (Main)

Learn how to create colorful acrylic paintings with Brooke Lambert, a professional printmaker and painter with a passionate interest and dedication to the arts. In this class you will be introduced to painting with acrylic, including techniques in color mixing, observational painting, and composition. At your own pace, you will learn how to paint still lifes in a relaxed and welcoming environment. This class will cover wet on wet and wet and dry brush techniques, sgraffito/combing, overlays/glazing, gel mediums, pattern making, and masking. You will come away from this class with beautiful paintings of your own and a greater understanding and appreciation for the medium of acrylic painting. Registration is required.

Reception and Gallery Talk: Hierosgamos: From Requiem to Revival (Main)

Join us for a reception and gallery talk by Constantia Thibaut as she discusses her latest artwork, Hierosgamos: From Requiem to Reunion.

When Thibaut's partner, Bill, died in 2018 after a long illness, she created a series of portraits that represent his struggle with his illness during the last months of his life when he was in hospice. Thibaut based these portraits on the hundreds of photographs she took of Bill with her cell phone and digital camera. Registration is required.

Would you like to make your own vinyl signs, stickers, or images to transfer to T-shirts and other textiles? In this workshop, you can learn how to use our Roland Camm-1 GS-24 vinyl cutter. Fabric Mending: Darning (Main)

Darning is a fabric mending technique that involves reinforcing or reweaving a portion of fabric by hand. In this workshop presented by Jessamy, a Somerville-based textile artist and sustainable fashion designer specializing in creative mending and upcycling, we’ll learn how to visibly mend holes and weak areas in sweaters, socks, and other knit fabrics using seed stitch and square darning techniques. You’ll leave with a sampler of both techniques that you can refer back to when tackling your own darning projects at home. Suitable for beginners with little or no darning experience, though it does help if you have some experience with hand sewing. Registration is required.
