Director's Update, October 29, 2023

10/27/20236 months ago

Maria McCauly, Hannah Donnelly, and Maria Sansone

Dear Patrons,

With appreciation to our staff, patrons, and community of support, Cambridge Public Library is known around the world for its services in support of its mission to welcome all, inspire minds and empower communities. I recently returned from a wonderful visit to Pamplona, Spain, where I served as a delegate representing the United States on a panel titled “Libraries and Reading for a Critical Citizenship” at the 11th National Congress of Spanish Public Libraries that focused on democracy, reading and the right to information. Our panel discussed the importance of promoting reading in preparing community members for civic engagement. Congress participants were fascinated with our services rooted in social justice including social work services, digital equity, STEAM programs, elder services and our commitment to amplifying diverse authors and their works.

Last Tuesday, I was interviewed by Hannah Donnelly and Maria Sansone of the Hub Today program on NBC 10 Boston about the impact of book banning around the country and in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. I encourage you to watch the interview to learn more about the issue and what you can do to support public libraries across the country. (In the photograph, from L-R: Hannah Donnelly and Maria Sansone). On Monday, October 30, the Massachusetts legislature will debate two bills about book banning: H.4005: An Act Ensuring Freedom to Read and S.2447: An Act Protecting Against Attempt to Ban, Remove, or Restrict Library Access to Materials.

Also related to civic engagement, the Main Library (449 Broadway, Rossi Room) and Valente Branch (826 Cambridge St., side entrance on Berkshire St.) are both early voting locations for the 2023 Municipal Election. Early voting is also available at the Cambridge Water Department (250 Fresh Pond Parkway). Any registered Cambridge voter can vote early. Unlike on Election Day, you are not assigned to a polling location during the early voting period. Early voting hours at the Main Library and Valente Branch Library are:

  • Saturday, October 28, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Sunday, October 29, 9 a.m.-3 p.m.
  • Monday, October 30, 8:30 a.m.-8 p.m.
  • Tuesday, October 31, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Wednesday, November 1, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Thursday, November 2, 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m.
  • Friday, November 3, 8:30 a.m.-Noon
