Join us for this special virtual event in honor of National Poetry Month! BUT ALSO HOPE features three outstanding poets, reading from their latest work: Shira Erlichman (Odes to Lithium), Yanyi (The Year of Blue Water) and Asiya Wadud (No Knowledge Is Complete Until It Passes Through My Body). These poets bravely acknowledge personal difficulties while demonstrating a powerful sense of hope, each in their own beautiful, original way.
Asiya Wadud is the author of Crosslight for Youngbird, day pulls down the sky/ a filament in gold leaf (written with Okwui Okpokwasili), Syncope and No Knowledge Is Complete Until It Passes Through My Body (Nightboat Books, 2021). Asiya’s work has been supported by the Foundation Jan Michalski, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, Brooklyn Poets, Dickinson House, and the New York Public Library, among others.
Yanyi is a writer and critic. He is the author of Dream of the Divided Field (One World Random House, forthcoming 2022) and The Year of Blue Water (Yale University Press 2019), winner of the 2018 Yale Series of Younger Poets Prize. He is the recipient of fellowships from Asian American Writers’ Workshop and Poets House.
Born in Israel, now living in Brooklyn, Shira Erlichman's poems explore recovery – of language,of home, of mind. Her poetry book Odes to Lithium centers around her experiences with mental illness. She has been awarded the Audre Lorde Award for Lesbian Poetry, the James Merrill Fellowship by the Vermont Studio Center, a residency at The Millay Colony, among others.
