Letter From the CIO

I am excited to announce the Information Technology Department’s (ITD) achievement of two important milestones: the conclusion of a departmental reorganization and the creation of a strategic plan. These accomplishments represent the completion of two significant initiatives recommended by the Gartner Group in their 2013 Report, namely, implementing a Citywide Governance Model and realigning the ITD Organization.

The City implemented a Governance Model in October 2013 and announced a realignment strategy for ITD in June 2014. Although this journey is not yet complete, already in place are the two most powerful components impacting future information technology (IT) strategies and funding investments for the City. The Governance Model creates a balanced approach to collecting IT requirements and applying business case methodology to the decision-making process while the new organizational structure positions ITD to efficiently respond to future demands for service.

Moving forward, ITD will focus on strengthening our leadership role in the City and fostering professional development to ensure that the skill sets of all IT professionals evolve and adapt to changes in technologies. ITD is committed to providing excellent customer service to City departments and the general public. Finally, I believe that the collaborative spirit borne out of the implementation of the governance process, as well as the realignment of ITD’s mission and organizational structure, has invigorated a Citywide IT cultural renaissance.

The following document serves as the cornerstone of the City’s new IT Strategic Plan. Not only does this document serve as a blueprint for “keeping the lights on,” but it also serves as the catalyst for “growing and transforming” our use of technology.
