Cambridgeport and its 1812 Streets

Perry, Lawrence, and Niagara streets, Lake and Erie, Decatur and Hamilton

These seven street names commemorate commanders, ships, and a decisive naval battle of the War of 1812.

Who named the streets? Why did they choose those names? And what did the war have to do with Cambridgeport, Massachusetts?

In 2012, during the War’s bicentennial year, the Cambridge Historical Commission and the City of Cambridge installed historic markers commemorating the "1812 Streets."  Download this PDF to explore the history of these streets and the names behind them.
