On Thursday, December 19, from 6:30-8 p.m., the Cambridge Public Library will host Reclaiming Folk, an event series celebrating people of color in folk music, created by singer-songwriter Naomi Westwater. The event will include a 60-minute performance in the Lecture Hall, followed by a Q&A session. Registration is required.
Musicians Naomi Westwater, Chris Walton, and Kemp Harris will each play original songs and one traditional folk song by a musician of color. The Reclaiming Folk event series is a celebration of people of color in folk music. The series seeks to make space for musicians of color to tell their stories, celebrate the accomplishments of Black folk musicians, and advocate for more inclusion in the folk music industry.
Naomi Westwater (they/she) is a queer, Black-multiracial singer-songwriter from Massachusetts. Their work combines folk music, poetry, and spirituality. Their hope is that through ritual and storytelling they can aid nature in the end of capitalism and the return of community, creativity, and collective joy.
This event is funded by the Cambridge Cultural Council.
