Director's Update, January 19, 2025

All Library locations will be closed on Monday, January 20, for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

If you missed our 50th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Day Lecture, 22-CityView will be streaming it on January 19 at 10 a.m., 1 p.m., 5 p.m., and 8 p.m., and tomorrow, January 20, at 9 a.m., 3 p.m., 6 p.m., and 9 p.m.

On Tuesday, January 21, from 6-7:30 p.m., celebrate the launch of The White Peril by Omo Moses at the Main Library. In The White Peril, Omo Moses deftly interweaves his own life story with excerpts from both his great-grandfather’s sermons and the writings of his father, the civil rights activist Bob Moses. The book launch will include a panel discussion on the theme of family and movement moderated by Tony Clark, co-President of MBK Cambridge. Panelists include Janet Moses, Omo Moses, Maisha Moses, Taba Moses, and Cambridge School Committee member Richard Harding. This event is cosponsored by Cambridge Public Library and MBK Cambridge. Registration is requiredThis event is full; a waitlist is available.

 

On Thursday, January 23, from 6-8:30 p.m., join us at the Main Library for the5th Annual Radical King Symposium. Join us for a panel conversation exploring these timeless principles with distinguished guests Ellen Semenoff, Dr. Andrew King, Dr. Lilly Havstad, Dr. Wayne Altman, Representative Marjorie Decker, and Anthony Galluccio, Esq. This event is cosponsored by Cambridge Public Library and MBK Cambridge.

CPL Nature Club: Morning Bird Watching Walk at Mount Auburn Cemetery (O'Neill)

Join us for a morning walk at one of the most renowned birdwatching spots in Cambridge, Mount Auburn Cemetery! We will help you identify birds, learn birdwatching tips and tricks, and familiarize yourself with migratory birds as well as those that can be spotted all year round. A limited supply of binoculars will be available. Registration is required.

Come to the Library for games and a different activity each week! Kids of all ages can hang out and do crafts or STEAM activities. No registration required. This week we will be exploring public art and monuments. Have you ever wanted to make art that spreads joy in a big way? In this kids’ workshop, you’ll design a monument celebrating someone or something important to you! Who or what do you think is missing from Cambridge’s monuments? Explore a variety of art materials and learn design strategies to bring your ideas to life with the exhibiting artist, Nicole Stone. We’ll provide art supplies like stencils, drawing tools, stamps, and colorful collage materials. Plus, you’ll get to meet the artist and teacher behind the “Monument Project” prints, which will be on display at the O’Neill Gallery in January.

Read to Dante, our local cuddly therapy dog! Trained therapy dogs provide warm and non-judgmental reading companions for new or experienced readers up to age 14. Tween Hang Out (Main)

Every Wednesday from 4 – 4:45 p.m. we’re opening up the Curious George Room on the third floor for ages 10 –12 to snack, craft, relax, and play video games. Central Square Shares the Love: Community Mosaic (Central Square)

Contribute to the Central Square Library Branch's Community Mosaic and share what you love about Central Square and the Central Square Branch Library. In February, we'll display our community contributions on our On the Wall gallery. 

Throughout the month of January, we're inviting patrons of all ages into the Library to contribute through our community art sessions. For this session, we'll have supplies to create individual paper mosaic tiles. All supplies provided.

This program, led by Zeenat Potia, will introduce and utilize mindfulness techniques to help us examine and regulate everyday life changes with a focus on aging.  Participants will learn and benefit from the development of a mindfulness practice to enable responding to getting older in a calm, clear and thoughtful manner.

Writing Workshop: Finding and Refining Your Voice in Nonfiction (Main)

This series of four workshops – which can be taken independently or sequentially – will help you nurture your unique perspective in nonfiction. We will cover how to refine your topic, research effectively, define your point of view, and build effective arguments and narratives. This will be suitable for writers of many types of nonfiction – essays, feature writing, creative nonfiction, biography, cultural criticism, memoir, and more.

Kids’ Zine Collective (O’Neill)
