City Seal of Cambridge

Director's Update, March 30, 2025

Dear Patrons,

Did you know that you can learn basic digital skills for free at the Library? This is part of our Digital Equity Initiative in partnership with the City of Cambridge, which aims to ensure that all Cambridge residents have access to technology and education opportunities. We offer take home technology, basic tech classes, and one-on-one tech help to strengthen digital literacy.

The Library circulates Chromebooks, hotspots, portable DVD players, GoPro cameras, and computer accessories and provides printers and scanners across all seven of our libraries. Anyone with a library card can check out these devices from their local library branch.

Our basic tech classes include Email Tips and Tricks, Internet Safety, and iPhone and iPad Basics, and more, and we provide one-on-one tech help at three of our branches. Through our tech help sessions, we are building a community of driven and engaged patrons equipped to participate in civic life here in Cambridge and beyond.

So far in Fiscal Year, we've held 163 digital equity programs with 282 attendees, and our one-on-one tech help sessions reached 437 patrons. In FY24, we held 183 programs with 569 attendees. CPL staff have helped patrons apply to jobs for the first time, learn how to download and print materials for a green card application, use Facebook marketplace to run their small business, and so much more.

In 2024, we launched the Digital Navigator Pilot Program (DNP), a collaborative effort between the City of Cambridge Information Technology Department, the Library, the Cambridge Public School Department, Just A Start, and Cambridge Community Television (CCTV). Digital Navigators aim to bridge the digital divide in our community. They provide one-on-one support to help patrons access the internet, set up devices, and use online services effectively. To book an appointment with the Cambridge Public Library Digital Navigator you can call 888.551.2167 or send an email to GetHelp@MassDigitalJEDI.org. So far, the Digital Navigator has held 245 patron appointments and distributed 77 devices.

The Cambridge Public Library is one of 100 public libraries selected to receive a Public Library Association grant to fund additional digital literacy efforts. Workshops will be offered on eight digital literacy topics. Courses cover basic technology skills which include topics such as internet use, video conferencing, cybersecurity, and using mobile devices.

Learn more about the Digital Equity Initiative and find a class or resource on our website or by calling 617-349-4040.
