On Thursday, December 4, the Cambridge Public Library will welcome Rachel Slade, author of Making it in America: The Almost Impossible Quest to Manufacture in the U.S.A. (And How It Got That Way), for the latest installment of the Our Path Forward Lecture Series. After the lecture, Slade will sit in conversation with Janelle Nanos, a business enterprise reporter at The Boston Globe and a finalist for a 2023 Pulitzer Prize This event is hybrid, and registration is required.
Making it in America is a moving and eye-opening look at the story of manufacturing in America, whether it can ever successfully return to our shores, and why our nation depends on it—told through the experience of one young couple in Maine as they attempt to rebuild a lost industry, ethically.
Rachel Slade is the acclaimed author of Into the Raging Sea, a national bestseller, New York Times Notable Book, and winner of the Maine Literary Award for nonfiction. She spent a decade at Boston Magazine as the design editor, and ultimately executive editor. Her editing and writing have won national awards in civic journalism, reporting, criticism, and reader service. She has been a lecturer in political science and journalism at Tufts University.
The Our Path Forward series, first introduced in 2016, encourages public discourse, understanding of key issues, and civic engagement. Speakers are invited to discuss relevant issuesimpacting our democracy. Past topics have included immigration, civil rights, and foreign policy.
