Cambridge Public Library Releases Strategic Framework
Accomplishments for access and equity include extending branch hours, eliminating fines, and launching a state-of-the art makerspace and STEAM learning program.
Cambridge, Mass., Tuesday, December 9, 2025—The Cambridge Public Library is pleased to release a report detailing progress it has made on its Strategic Framework over the past seven years, which encompasses over 40 projects, as well as a presentation highlighting key accomplishments.
Key accomplishments include:
-
Opening The Hive, the first free, public-facing makerspace to open in Massachusetts. It features state-of-the-art digital and traditional maker equipment, podcast and audio recording studios, and an extended reality space. The Hive has welcomed over 5,600 patrons.
The Strategic Framework was initially developed in 2019, with community input, to inform the Library’s programs, resources, and initiatives, using their mission as a guide.
In 2026, the Library will update its Strategic Framework through a community-centered planning process. Community engagement activities, including a public survey and outreach, will take place in the New Year.
“I’m proud of the progress we have made toward our strategic priorities and our mission to welcome all, inspire minds, and empower community,” says Maria McCauley, the Director of Libraries for the City of Cambridge. “We couldn’t have done it without community, City, and staff support, and I’m excited to see what the next planning process will bring.”
