Jacob Lavoie is a proud Cambridge resident, cheese lover, and the Program Director for Food & Wine at the Cambridge Center for Adult Education. With a background in wine and spirits, arts and culture, and lifelong learning, Jacob brings curiosity, creativity, and collaboration into the classroom. In this class, he invites students to explore the art of building a stunning and delicious cheese board perfect for entertaining or a cozy night in. Jacob will guide participants through selecting a balanced mix of cheeses, charcuterie, and flavorful accompaniments while sharing tips for thoughtful pairings, visual composition, and crowd-pleasing presentation. Students will leave with practical techniques they can use for future gatherings, celebrations, or weeknight treats, along with inspiration for wine pairings to elevate the experience. The class concludes with a communal tasting of cheese and charcuterie.

Youth ages 10-16 are welcome to join three sessions (Tuesdays, February 3, 10, 24) of the table-top game Dungeons and Dragons (DnD), as we build our cooperative role-play and storytelling skills. The first session will include time to build characters and review rules of gameplay. Following sessions will follow a storyline through to the final session. Registration is required, as the program is capped at 6 players. Please plan to attend all sessions! Registering for Session 1 includes the following weekly sessions. No prior DnD experience is required, and experienced players are also welcome to join. The City of Cambridge does not discriminate, including on the basis of disability. Join us for a morning walk at one of the most renowned birdwatching spots in Cambridge, Mount Auburn Cemetery! We will help you identify birds, learn birdwatching tips and tricks, and familiarize yourself with migratory birds as well as those that can be spotted all year round. A limited supply of binoculars will be available. The walk will meet at the Bird Sighting Board near the front entrance of Mt. Auburn Cemetery at 10:15 am. Registration is required. This event can only accommodate a certain number of participants. One registration is good for one person. If you do not register, you cannot participate. Join the Cambridge Public Library in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by welcoming Valeria Luiselli—the acclaimed author of several books, including Tell Me How It Ends and Lost Children Archive, the recipient of the 2021 Dublin Literary Award—for a reading from her new novel, Beginning Middle End. In Beginning Middle End, which received starred reviews from Publisher's Weekly, Kirkus Reviews, and Booklist, Luiselli returns to the road novel form which she innovated in Lost Children Archive. Called "a beautiful, maybe perfect, novel," Beginning Middle End follows a mother and daughter on a quest to start over and find for themselves a new story, in the process weaving "together four generations of women through archaeology, mythology, and the natural world" (W Magazine). After reading from her work, Luiselli will sit in conversation with Eloisa Amezcua, an award-winning poet, translator, and author of Fighting Is Like a Wife. An audience Q&A and book signing will follow. Registration is required.

In honor of Save a Life Day and Recovery Month, please join us on Thursday, September 24th from 6-8pm to volunteer to put together overdose prevention kits at the Cambridge Public Library, Main Branch. The You Can initiative (youcan.info) addresses overdose deaths by increasing access to lifesaving skills and resources statewide. Volunteers play a crucial role in this program by assembling the kits that are then mailed out across the state, getting lifesaving resources out to people and families who need them, free of cost. Each kit contains naloxone, fentanyl test strips, and other vital resources. Recovery Month, observed each September, affirms that recovery from substance use and mental health challenges is possible, and shows the city's support for every Cambridge community member in all stages of their recovery journeys. Save a Life Day is a nationwide day of action that promotes year-round widespread naloxone access as one solution to the overdose crisis. Volunteers will be able to leave with a completed kit, if desired. Representatives from the Cambridge Health Department will also be onsite to provide additional resources and support. This program is a partnership between the Massachusetts Department of Public Health and Health Resources in Action (HRiA) and hosted by the Cambridge Public Health Department and Cambridge Public Library.

We live in an age where we carry our smartphones everywhere we go. Built into this device is a camera that can help us document the world around us. Whether it’s taking family portraits, beautiful landscapes, or in some cases the meal we just sat down to eat, we’re all constantly taking photos. This class will not only teach you to take the best possible photos, but how to edit your photos to make them look as good as they possibly can. We will also cover how to organize the photos on your phone. We will learn how to become visual storytellers through projects I'll assign each week followed by thoughtful group discussions of your photos. You need only bring two things to this class: your smartphone and your imagination. This program will be held in the Rindge Room.
