The Cambridge Police Department was pleased to welcome 15 new Cambridge Auxiliary Police Officers and promote four others this week. The new Auxiliary Officers were sworn-in by Skip Botelho, Dispatch Supervisor with the Cambridge Emergency Communications Department, and officially welcomed by Police Commissioner Branville G. Bard, Jr. and Sergeant Steven Magalhaes, who oversees the Auxiliary Unit, in the Community Room at the Robert W. Healy Public Safety Facility on Monday evening.

The Cambridge Auxiliary Police has been selflessly serving the city of Cambridge since 1941. Originally created as a civil defense measure, the Auxiliary Unit consists of more than 20 volunteers who assist the Cambridge Police Department with traffic and crowd control at parades, festivals, road races, and other city events. The Auxiliary also conducts vehicle and foot patrols during holidays and other times as needed.
“Auxiliary Officers are a great asset to the Cambridge community,” Commissioner Bard said. “We appreciate their willingness to volunteer and help give back to the community in a number of important ways. If there is interest, we will do everything we can to help them gain valuable experience to help them become full-time Cambridge Police Officer or employee within the Department.”
