Last week marked the end of an era at the Cambridge Police Department as we celebrated not one, but two retirements.
Officer Eric Helberg retired after 26 years of service and is perhaps best known for his role as the original Homeless Outreach Officer. When Officer Helberg first took on the role his main responsibility was transporting unhoused residents to local shelters. Over time he was able to earn the trust of these vulnerable residents and took it upon himself to help
connect many with detox and transitional housing services. This work laid the foundation for many of the added services that several units within CPD now provide.

Sgt. Tom Maldonaldo retired after 32 years of service, he spent his career in the Operations Division as a Patrol Officer and later as a Supervisor. Known for his ever-present smile and distinct laugh, his positive and easy-going demeanor made him easy to approach. As one Lieutenant noted it would be hard to find anyone at CPD with a negative thing to say about Tom.

The Cambridge Police Department is grateful to both Officer Helberg and Sergeant Maldonaldo for their years of service to the department and the City of Cambridge. Please join us in wishing both the best in their retirement.
