The end of March marked five years since Mitchel Iviquel was last seen by her family, but despite all the time that has passed Cambridge Police are still working to locate her. An Army Veteran who had been deployed overseas, Iviquel was thought to be unhoused in the Central Square area at the time of her disappearance.
The last time it can be confirmed that Mitchel was seen was in March of 2020 at a family members home in
Somerville. Although she’d been unhoused since 2013, Mitchel would never go more than 2 or 3 months without contacting her family members. As more months went by in 2020 without any word on her whereabouts, the family grew increasingly concerned. First, family members made efforts to locate Mitchel on their own. When these efforts proved to be unsuccessful a family member approached a CPD Patrol Officer in Central Sq. to file a Missing Person Report in March of 2021.
The case was subsequently assigned to the Criminal Investigations Section of the Cambridge Police Department. Over the years detectives have pursued leads, however none have been successful in locating Mitchel. Despite the time that has passed, the case is still an active investigation. The ultimate goal is to locate Mitchell and offer her any assistance she may need. In addition, CPD hopes to give her family knowledge of where she is or what may have happened.
Perhaps the biggest hurdle for investigators is the lack of new leads or information. "It's very difficult, because we literally have zero leads," CPD Superintendent Pauline Wells said during a 2023 interview on the case. "She had VA benefits that she has not taken advantage of. She has no EBT card. There is literally no trace of where she may have gone." As another year passes investigators are hopeful that someone will come forward with the information needed to locate Mitchel.
Mitchel is described as a black female, currently 47 years old and 5’3. At the time she was last seen Mitchel weighed approximately 125 lbs with a small build and had black hair. When Mitchel disappeared she was thought to have been traveling with a black male and his daughter who was believed to be about 6 – 8 years old at the time. The father and daughter were deaf and Mitchel was able to communicate with them through sign language. To date, Cambridge Police have not been able to identify this pair.
Anyone with information about the current whereabouts of Mitchel Iviquel or with knowledge of what may have happened to her is asked to contact the Cambridge Police Department Criminal Investigations Unit Tip Line at (617) 349-3121.
