Active Investigation Underway into Incident at 8-10 Harvard Sq. Protest

The Cambridge Police Department (CPD) is aware of and actively investigating an incident that occurred during a protest in Harvard Sq. on Sunday, August 10th. The incident, which is depicted in a widely circulated social media video, shows a motorist brandishing an axe during an altercation with protesters.

During the demonstration our officers observed a tense, seemingly verbal argument between protesters and the motorist. Officers immediately responded and attempted to de-escalate the situation by separating those involved. After the individuals had been separated, officers attempted to speak with those involved to understand what had occurred. While very few people shared information with police, officers did learn that the motorist had brandished an axe. The officers documented that in a police report the day of the protest and an investigation began immediately. The video that has been widely circulated online was not shared with CPD until after it was posted to social media.

The investigation is on-going. If there are any witnesses or victims who wish to provide a statement on what occurred they are encouraged to contact CPD Criminal Investigation Section at (617) 349-3121.
