The Cambridge Police Department (CPD) regrets to announce the passing of retired police K-9 Kevin of the
Explosive Ordnance Disposal Unit. Kevin first joined the
department in 2014 and was partnered with Officer Steve Lyons. Upon successfully completing a rigorous training course for explosive detection dogs, he went on to pass the ATF Odor Recognition test and achieved certification with the International Police Working Dog Association.
Over his career with the CPD, Kevin and Off. Lyons took part in safeguarding numerous events, both in Cambridge and across the region. These included multiple July 4th Celebrations, Boston Marathons, commencement exercises, dignitary visits and other community gatherings. During a typical shift, Kevin and Off. Lyons would respond to calls for suspicious packages or bomb threats within Cambridge or in neighboring communities. When he wasn’t responding to service calls, Kevin and Off. Lyons were community favorites, meeting many new people as they patrolled local gathering spots.
After many years of dedicated service, Kevin and Off. Lyons both retired from the CPD in 2023. Kevin was able to spend his remaining years alongside his human partner. As we say goodbye to Kevin, we thank him for his years of dedicated service to our community. We also keep Off. Lyons and all those who worked closely with Kevin in our thoughts.
