Cambridge Police Department’s Approach to Preparing and Providing Resources for Ongoing Protests

Cambridge, MA - After the Israel-Hamas conflict broke out in October of 2023, Cambridge has seen a significant number of protests. In recent weeks, there were also protest encampments on the properties of local universities.

The Cambridge Police Department (CPD) is committed to ensuring safety for everyone in Cambridge including protestors. CPD worked closely with all the major universities fulfilling our partnership with their police agencies through the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which outlines if they need support on campus how we would assist. Throughout the entire process, we have been actively working with our partners to make sure we have a situational awareness of all the protests in our area.

Free speech is the cornerstone of our society and CPD always works to provide ample space and opportunities for the public to engage in their constitutional rights. CPD’s fundamental goal is to provide a safe environment for everyone who is present during protests. Verbal discussion and de-escalation is always our goal, but we will enforce the laws when there is physical violence or malicious destruction of property.
