Cambridge Police Department Shares Crime Prevention & Safety Tips After Emerging Pattern of Housebreaks

Cambridge, MA - February 9, 2024
- The Cambridge Police Department’s Crime Analysis Unit has identified an uptick in housebreaks in recent months. Over the past 2-3 months, there has been an increase in housebreak activity in The Port and Mid-Cambridge neighborhoods. Entry has been through unlocked doors and windows. Targeted items include electronics, jewelry, and cash.

Cambridge Police Department has increased patrols while it investigates housebreak activity in the areas of 200-375 Columbia Street, 200 block of Havard Street and 100 block of Oxford Street.

To help better protect yourself from a housebreak or attempted housebreak, the Cambridge Police encourage residents to take the following measures:

WATCH HERE:

• Always lock your doors and windows at your home or apartment, particularly your basement door(s).
• Communicate with everyone you share your home or apartment with and remind them to lock doors and windows when they leave, even if it is only for a short time.
• Install guards on windows that prevent them from being raised more than a few inches.
• Never prop open a door or let someone in behind you if you live in an apartment building, particularly if you don’t know them.
• Install motion sensor lights around your home and out of reach.
• Home security cameras can help deter potential intruders from entering your property.
• It is critically important for residents to report any crime or activity that may appear to be suspicious.
