The suspect wanted in relation to an August gunshots incident in the Riverside neighborhood of Cambridge has been taken into custody.

Curtis Preston, 32, Everett, was arrested this morning in Boston. He will face multiple charges out of Cambridge after a warrant was issued for his arrest, including Discharging a Firearm within 500 Feet of a Building, Carrying a Firearm without a License, Possession a Firearm without an FID Card, and Possession of a Firearm During Intimidation of a Witness.

An investigation was initiated after a ShotSpotter activation detected two gunshots in the area of Magee Street and Putnam Gardens on Saturday, August 27 at 12:33 a.m. After initially not being able to locate any ballistic evidence, officers continued to investigate the situation throughout the weekend and were later able to locate two shell casings on a sidewalk on Magee Street. Fortunately, no residents or officers were injured during the incident.

After working closely with community partners, Cambridge Police officers were able to quickly determine that this was not a random act of violence and identified Preston as the suspect associated with the shooting. Following an investigation, an arrest warrant was sought and granted, and Preston was located and arrested today in Boston by the Cambridge Police, State Police, and U.S. Marshals Service.

Three of the last five gunshot-related incidents in Cambridge have resulted in arrests, including two of the last three incidents. Active investigations remain ongoing for the two other non-charged incidents.

“Gun violence can be complex and challenging to investigate, but I have been so proud of the relentless efforts exhibited by our officers,” said Cambridge Police Commissioner Christine Elow. “We have been incredibly focused and committed to resolving these incidents, and will do everything we can to support the city in servicing our young people to prevent future violence.”
