On Wednesday, April 23rd the Police Department was grateful for the opportunity to join multiple City of Cambridge departments and regional partners out in front of Robert W. Healy Public Safety Building for the Science of Public Safety Touch-A-Truck Event.
This event, which has become an annual tradition during what is commonly the April school break week, seeks to provide our youngest community members with an up-close look at some of the jobs that help keep our community safe. The various agencies involved brought not only vehicles large and small, but other interactive exhibits.
Multiple units from within the Police Department took part, each with a unique part of policing to show case. This included two police motorcycles from the Traffic Unit. Our Crime Scene Services unit transformed the community room into a mock-crime scene for visitors to process. The Community Outreach Unit shared refreshments from the city’s Ice Cream Trailer, an all-electric cruiser, and numerous games. The Explosive Ordnance Unit, better known as the Bomb Squad, had one of their K-9 teams on-hand along with a truck full of specialized equipment.
We are grateful to the members of police department, Cambridge Fire, Public Works, Animal Control, Emergency Communications, Community Safety and the Park Rangers, along with our partners from the Middlesex Sheriff’s Office, and Professional Ambulance Service who took the time to showcase what they do. It is our hope that those who attended enjoyed the opportunity to learn more about the many important jobs in our city.
