On Wednesday, April 30th after a day of training at Cambridge Police Headquarters members of the seventh class at the Cambridge-Northeastern Police Academy took to the streets and trails around Kendall Sq. for what is their only full class run in Cambridge. This run is symbolic as it includes a stop at the Officer Sean A. Collier Memorial located on MIT’s campus at the corner of Main and Vassar St, the spot where MIT Police Officer Sean Collier lost his life in the line of duty just over 12 years ago in the days following the Boston Marathon Bombing. At the memorial the student officers paused to hear a few words from academy staff, recognized a moment of silence, and offered a salute in Sean’s memory. With just a few weeks left before the class’s anticipated graduation date in June, this experience serves as a reminder of the risk they will accept as they go to work as Police Officers in Cambridge and other city, town, or campus communities.
