Parks and Recreation Staff Preparing Athletic Fields for Spring Season Use

Parks staff prepare a baseball field using a groomer machine
City staff use a groomer and other equipment to prepare a baseball field for spring play.

It’s officially spring and city staff are working diligently to prepare City fields for the spring sports season! While synthetic turf is already being used, the winter thaw and snow melt have made grass fields soggy and vulnerable to damage if they are used before adequate preparation.

We expect all fields to open for athletic use by early April. Some grass fields may be available sooner depending on site based conditions.

In preparation, our crews are focusing on:

  • Assessing the ball field conditions daily, getting pitcher and rubber plates ready for baseball and softball use, and preparing to groom fields when they are no longer at risk of damage.

  • Removing debris that fell on the fields during the winter season and recent storms.

  • Ordering and deploying equipment and supplies to support field maintenance throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons.|

  • Repairing seasonal damage.

  • Placing portable toilets at designated sites.

We appreciate the community’s understanding as we prepare athletic fields at Danehy Park and throughout the city to ensure course durability and quality of play in the months to come.
